What is Advent?

A writer friend suggested writing a blog for the Christmas Season and the more I thought about it, the more I liked the idea.  As the first day of Advent approaches, I’m looking up what all the symbolism means.  When I was a kid back in Omaha, NE,  the only thing a Christmas celebration meant was presents, a tree, and a day at my Granny’s house with myriads of cousins, aunts, and uncles.  I learned somewhere (our family didn’t attend church regularly) that it was also Jesus birthday. There were beautiful songs that played on the radio and houses were decorated with pretty lights.  My dad used to drive us around town to look at all the lights until the energy crisis came in and everyone had to tone it down.  Yes, Christmas had a festive air about it and the anticipation of gifts under the tree to open gave it that much more excitement.  But I had never heard the word “advent”.  What is it?  Should I pay attention to it, since I love Jesus now and read His Word?  For years I have been indifferent to this tradition.  Christmas meant spending money we didn’t have so our kids would have a nice Christmas Day.  It was right up there with back-to-school shopping as the most stressful time of year.  This year, 2013, it is no different.  I want to be generous and bless my family with the things they want the most, but it is not possible.  I know, it’s not about the gifts.  Isn’t it, though?  If your children got up that morning and there were no presents under the tree, wouldn’t it be a big deal to them?  We don’t want to disappoint our children or any child.  So gifts are important to everyone.

That brings me to Advent.  The name means “arrival”.  We are anticipating the arrival of Jesus, preparing our hearts to receive Him.  My goal is to write every day (or at least a few times a week) my musings and memories of Christmas but mostly of my love for Jesus.  This is going to be an amazing journey.
