In the Beginning: Freedom

Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-2

In the beginning, there was freedom.  Adam and Eve were created with the freedom to choose, but instead of choosing God, they chose to obey their own selfish desire.  Immediately, the human race was plunged into the worst kind of slavery:  slavery to sin and self.  This kind of bondage opened the door for human beings to enslave and oppress each other.

The Declaration of Independence was a document that declared freedom from the tyranny of the British.  It was based on the premise that all men were created equal.  But the premise was flawed because equality in the minds of the writers meant white males.  My ancestors were left out of this declaration and suffered under bondage. Real freedom is the truth in practice.  God’s truth is unchanging and unchangeable.  It has the power to transform from the inside out.  The lies and hatred of racism cannot stand in the face of God’s Word.  His Word says to love our neighbors as ourselves. Who is my neighbor?  Racism cannot answer this question because it was created in the pit of hell.  Love, God’s love in us, defeats that darkness.

Are you ready to come into the light of truth, no matter the cost?  If you desire to be truly free, there is only one forward path.

“Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”  John 14:6
