No matter how lofty your goal, it will never manifest itself if you do nothing. It is not enough to believe you can reach it. It is not enough to talk about it with everyone you meet. It is not enough to have all the materials to fulfill it. You must be in motion in order to create it.
One of the laws this universe is the law of cause and effect. In the book, Kingdom Mindsets for Success, Alain Dagba writes: “It is foolish to expect an effect without a cause. It is foolish to expect a result without an action”. What are you expecting to happen, now that you have given voice to your desire? Nothing will happen without action steps. Put some running shoes on your goals.
Action steps are concrete. They are not ideas or concepts. They are verbs. They need to move. Start off with at least three action steps and a time frame for accomplishing them. This is the cause part of the universal law. The effect is the completion of the task you set out to do. Imagine a ladder propped up against the side of your house. You have to get to the roof. If you stand at the bottom and look up, you won’t get very far. But if you start climbing, you will make progress until you reach your destination. The same is true of your goals. Take the steps necessary to see them through.
To begin clarifying your goals, you need to see the end product of what you desire. If this is unclear, all the steps to setting and fulfilling your goals will be frustrating and confusing. You will not be sure if what you are doing is bringing you closer to the goal or taking you away from it. You cannot afford to be distracted with unrelated tasks when it comes to reaching your life goals. Every moment is a precious gift. Don’t squander them.
For example, one of my goals is to finish the first draft of my next book by a certain date. The first draft is a smaller piece of the end product, which is a published book ready for my readers to enjoy. If I decided to write a poem instead, that will not bring me closer to my end product. I may write the poem, but I will not have a published book. Procrastinating is also a time waster. You can never get those gifts back.
Draw or write down the big picture of your goal and keep it in front of you until it is manifested. See the end and know for certain that the action steps you are taking will bring about the end you desire.
To clarify something is to make it clearer so that everyone understands the true meaning. The dreams you have while you are asleep you either forget altogether or remember only little pieces of it. The dreams I’m talking about are the ones you have while you are awake, conscious of your life and the universe around you. Clarifying these dreams is a first step to fulfilling them.
How can you make your dream clearer? Write it down in one sentence. Make the sentence as specific as you can. It’s important to write this down. The act of writing makes it more concrete and helps you to think about it clearly. When you can do that, you have successfully clarified your dream. If you can’t, work on it until you do.
One definition of goal-setting from the book Promoting Executive Function in the Classroom is: “the ability to identify a guiding purpose for his or her actions, based on an awareness of personal strengths and limitations, and a CLEAR vision of the desired final result”. If you are not clear, it will be difficult to create action steps that will lead to the final result you envision. The beginning of any planning you do in life is to understand what you want to end up with. If you don’t understand that, you can’t make a plan that will accomplish what you desire.
